KeithRN Community Update – Oct. 16, 2024

"Educating Healers Who Practice Nursing"

Last month, I attended the NLN Education Summit which emphasized competency-based education to better prepare nursing graduates. Brother Ignatius Perkins, OP, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, FNYAM, FNCBC, a Dominican Friar and nursing professor, delivered a powerful message: "We are educating healers who practice nursing."

During his acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement for Transformative Excellence Award, he highlighted the importance of compassion, especially for the vulnerable, and honoring those who came before us.

He invoked a blessing, emphasizing the healing power of nurses' hands and their role in promoting human dignity, freedom, and flourishing. This sentiment aligns with the beliefs of Isabel Hampton Robb, a founder of the National League for Nursing, who emphasized the intrinsic value of nursing and its spirit of service, transcending any monetary reward.

Read more of the insights he shared. I hope this inspires you to consider the profound impact of your work as a nurse educator. As a "formator," you shape not only your students' skills, but also their enduring professional identity as nurses.

Take care,

Keith Rischer, PhD, RN, CCRN, CEN
