We were deeply inspired by the Educating Nurses: A Radical Transformation Conference in January—so much so that we decided to dedicate the month of March to further exploring its impact.
If you read last month’s Community Update, you learned about the outstanding presentations from esteemed educators such as Patricia Benner, Christine Tanner, Pat Kyriakidis, and many others.
As Keith and I reflected on these sessions, we were particularly struck by the enduring commitment to lifelong learning demonstrated by these legendary figures in nursing education.
This reflection prompted us to ask ourselves:
What valuable lessons did we gain from these educators and experiences?
How can we apply this knowledge to drive meaningful reform in nursing education?
The Wisdom of Experience
One key takeaway was the immense value that retired nurses and those with decades of experience bring to the profession. Their insights, shaped by years of hands-on practice and teaching, offer lessons many of us may never encounter firsthand.
The question then becomes: How do we ensure their knowledge reaches the broader nursing community?
As we pondered this, I received an email from Rose Caballero.
A Remarkable Educator
Rose is an educator who actively utilizes the KeithRN Think Like a Nurse Membership. In her email, she expressed her gratitude to Keith and me for the resources and support that have helped her engage students, contextualize teaching and skills to patient care, and foster clinical judgment.
At first, I considered this a thoughtful testimonial, but then I read on.
After learning that Rose is 80 and just retiring, I had to learn more about her. After a quick Google search, I knew I had to speak to her! Here is what I learned.
